What is financial planning?

Financial planning is a systematic approach where the financial planner helps you to define your financial goals and then by the use of various strategies helps you maximize and protect your existing financial resources to achieve these financial goals.  The difference between having a goal and a dream is having a plan which outlines the steps you need to take to reach it.

Our goal is simply to help you plan and implement a series of strategies that will allow you to take control of your financial future.  Common strategies evaluated include - budgeting, risk and insurance analysis, savings and wealth creation, estate planning, investments, superannuation and pre-retirement.

In other words, financial planning is the process of meeting your life goals through proper management of your finances. Life goals can include buying a home, saving for your children's education or planning for retirement.  It is a process that consists of specific steps that help you to take a big-picture look at where you are financially.  Using these steps you can work out where you are now, what you may need in the future and what you must do to reach your goals.

There are a number of major components in a good financial plan:

  • A clear definition of your short term and long term goals
  • A clearly documented statement of your current financial and life position
  • An agreed position on your attitude to risk and return
  • Well researched and documented financial recommendations on strategies and supporting products aimed at helping you achieve your goals
  • A documented fee structure applicable to your plan and the subsequent recommendations
  • A clearly documented series of steps to implement your plan
  • A regular ongoing review of your plan to make sure it is up to date and adjustments are made to reflect your current position.

What Does A Financial Planner Do?

A financial planner is someone who uses the financial planning process and their skills to help you figure out how to meet your life goals.

The planner can take a `big picture` view of your financial situation and make financial planning recommendations that are right for you.  The planner can look at all of your needs including budgeting and saving, taxes, investments, insurance, superannuation, estate planning and retirement planning.

Or, the planner may work with you on a single financial issue but within the context of your overall situation.  This big picture approach to your financial goals sets a financial planner apart from other professionals who may have been trained to focus only on a particular area of your financial life, for example, stock broking, accounting or law.

The financial planner is the best friend you need to advise you on ways of achieving financial goals.  He or she is a client-oriented professional who works in the best interest of clients focusing on the strategies required to help you meet your objectives.

Investment markets and superannuation rules for the different investment options and government entitlements are complex and frequently change.  Through our education, training and experience we have the knowledge to explain your options in a way that you’ll understand.  We break down the various parts of your financial plan and explain how they achieve your goals.  An implementation plan explains the various steps, timing and the person responsible for implementing each step.

When you have a professional relationship with a planner that does not mean that they replace other professionals such as lawyers or accountants.  A financial planner’s work is complementary to these professionals. In many cases the planner acts as a coordinator in the planning process by bringing together the different aspects of your financial situation into a cohesive, well integrated plan.
